Costco’s Gas Stations Are Changing—Here’s What You Should Know

Costco is doubling down on its fuel game, extending the hours of its members-only gas stations nationwide. The wholesale club giant announced that most of its fuel stations will now stay open until 10 p.m., with some locations also opening earlier in the morning.

“Generally, our stations are now staying open an hour later than they did previously, with some opening earlier as well,” said Costco CEO Rob Vachris Quartz reported. These expanded hours, combined with competitive fuel prices, are designed to lure even more members to Costco’s pumps.

Costco’s fuel business is a significant driver of its bottom line. In 2024, fuel sales made up roughly 12% of the company’s total sales, a fact not lost on competitors like Walmart and Sam’s Club. While those chains’ fuel stations are open to all, Costco’s exclusivity—tied to its membership—has proven to be a powerful incentive.

Joe Camberato, an expert in retail finance, noted, “Costco’s move isn’t just about fuel. It’s about reinforcing membership value and building long-term loyalty.”

With increased competition in the fuel space, and electric vehicle adoption still a slow burn, Costco’s decision to make gas more accessible is a smart play. It keeps members engaged while offering a practical service that competitors struggle to match.

As Usha Haley of Wichita State University observed, “Costco’s fuel strategy mirrors Walmart’s in terms of value, but leverages exclusivity to create a premium experience.”

Costco’s bet? That more access to affordable fuel will keep its members filling up their tanks—and their carts.
